View From the Chair
ISRI's Championship Team
By Frank Cozzi, Chair, ISRI
In my seven months as ISRI chair, I've learned—more than ever before in my 30 years of ISRI service—what an exceptional staff we have in Washington, D.C. I could list and applaud the 37 ISRI staff members by name, but I think it's just as appropriate to recognize the staff as a team and point out how Team ISRI is working for you.
The ISRI safety department, for instance, has been working on many fronts to make our industry more safety-minded. Take the ISRI Safety Pledge, which provides a simple reminder for us to work "Safely or Not at All." There's also the Scrap Safety Blueprint program, offered free to ISRI members who sign the pledge. This program reviews members' safety efforts, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. There's also ISRI's National Safety Council, which gives scrap safety professionals a forum to brainstorm solutions to common problems. Beyond the safety department, ISRI has a government affairs team that's second to none. Our state legislative monitoring program, for example, looks for potentially detrimental legislation, protecting members' interests in all 50 states. ISRI also boasts an active grassroots political effort, which lobbies for recycling issues from the ground up. At the federal level, ISRI is a respected player on Capitol Hill, as the recently organized recycling caucuses in the U.S. House and Senate demonstrate. Every member knows something about ISRI's meetings staff, which organizes invaluable networking and training events throughout the year. The highlight is the annual convention, the biggest recycling industry show in the world. Much of the convention's success has to do with the exhibit hall, which provides one-stop shopping for all of our equipment and service needs. Talk about feeling like a kid in a candy shop! Last year's record-setting convention in Las Vegas will be a tough act to follow, but if the virtually sold-out 2007 exhibit hall is any indication, ISRI could test that record in New Orleans next April. As for communications, ISRI's talented wordsmiths produce many informative, award-winning resources, including this magazine, the ISRI Focus newsletter, The Monday Report and The Friday Report, the ISRI Membership Directory and Industry Guide, and so much more. I haven't even mentioned other ISRI departments, including membership, which tends to the needs of all members, and finance, which keeps ISRI's fiscal ship aright, among others. Just know that every ISRI department and every ISRI professional is working hard, every day, for you. I am often asked if being ISRI chair is as demanding as I expected. Though the position does take time, most of the work is done by ISRI's talented and dedicated staff. I now know how Phil Jackson felt coaching Michael Jordan when the Chicago Bulls were world champions. Believe me, it's a good feeling. President's Perspective
A New Home for ISRI
By Robin Wiener, ISRI president
After 15 years in our current office space, ISRI will be moving to a new headquarters Nov. 17. Ironically, our new home will be one block from the offices we left 15 years ago. Who says you can't go home again?
As of Nov. 20, our new address will be
1615 L St. NW, Suite 600 The direct contact information for all individual staff members-phone, fax, and e-mail-will not change. We chose this new location following a thorough analysis of our real estate options throughout the Washington metropolitan area, including the advantages and disadvantages of buying property versus renting. A committee of the volunteer leadership, including many past board chairs, convened more than two years ago to begin the process that brought us to this point. Why are we moving? A combination of dollar savings and improved efficiency. The new space will save ISRI significant money over the course of the 10-year lease compared with our current space. In addition, the layout of the new offices will improve the efficiency of day-to-day operations throughout the suite. I'm excited that we found a space that not only yields cost and efficiency advantages but also allows us to remain in downtown Washington. Being in the heart of the city enables the ISRI staff to respond quickly as issues arise. We can be available at a moment's notice to attend meetings at virtually any government agency, participate in hearings and other matters on Capitol Hill, respond to requests from embassies and delegations from overseas, and sit in on strategic sessions and meetings with our counterparts from other industries, associations, and stakeholders. If your travels bring you to Washington, I invite you to visit our new offices and say hello. We will give you the grand tour and, more important, we will introduce you to the ISRI staff, which is working on your behalf every day.
