Platinum Group Metals Survey 2003 by CPM Group is an annual report on markets for platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Focusing on CPM's global supply-and-demand forecasts for last year, this year, and into 2004, the report discusses how demand for all three platinum-group metals (PGMs) "has held up rather well ... despite the worldwide economic slowdown." The publication explores some of the structural shortcomings of PGM supply-and-demand statistics, including a "large and persistent gap" between metals entering the United States and market estimates of U.S. fabrication demand, which suggests the demand estimates are understated, CPM argues. The report also discusses the recent rise in reported platinum use for Chinese jewelry. Available for $150 from CPM Group, 30 Broad St., 37th Floor, New York, NY 10004; 212/785-8320 (fax, 212/785-8325); or visit www.cpmgroup.com.

Woodland Publishing Releases Reports
Woodhead Publishing Ltd. has published a series of metal-industry reports, including the following studies of the global lead and zinc, aluminum, copper, and nickel industries:

Lead and Zinc: Threats and Opportunities in the Years Ahead looks at an industry that’s under more scrutiny from environmental legislation but that has a positive outlook nonetheless. The report, which notes that more than 80 percent of lead used in the United States goes into lead-acid batteries, forecasts a 2.9-percent increase in global lead mine output to 3.03 million mt and examines lead and zinc usage in the automotive and construction industries.

Nickel: An Industry on the Brink of Expansion addresses the nickel industry’s key issues as it emerges from the price volatility of recent years. The book explains why 2002 should bring an upswing for this market, though indications of output are unclear.

Aluminum: The Challenges Ahead reviews the state of the world aluminum industry at the start of the 21st century, including an examination of the aftermath of 1994’s Memorandum of Understanding. The publication reveals the damage done to aluminum demand in both the automotive and beverage-can sectors, as well as the effects of the recession in the United States and Europe in 2001 and 2002. Among its observations, the report notes that aluminum is beginning to see signs of success in the mass-produced end of the automotive market.

Copper: A Material for the New Millennium offers a bright outlook for copper, with a forecast of a rise in world copper prices, a pickup in demand, and increased capacity.

Each report is available for $660 from Woodhead Publishing, Abington Hall, Abington, Cambridge CB1 6AH, England; 44/1223-891358; or visit www.woodhead-publishing.com.
