Aurubis Completes Acquisition of Metallo

Integrated nonferrous metals smelter Aurubis (Hamburg, Germany) has acquired Belgian recycler and secondary smelter Metallo (Beerse, Belgium) for 380 million euros.
The two companies integrated June 1.

Aurubis says the merger will expand its ability to process industrial and precious metals. Metallo processes about 315,000 mt of scrap each year, including copper, tin, and lead, at its plants in Beerse, Belgium, and Berango, Spain. With those two facilities added to Aurubis’ other facilities in Hamburg and Lünen, Germany; Pirdop, Bulgaria; and Olen, Belgium, it will have the capacity to process about 1 million tons of scrap annually, it says.

The European Commission approved the merger in May. Aurubis is the largest integrated copper producer in Europe and largest refiner of copper scrap worldwide, the commission says. Metallo will keep its name, Aurubis says. Visit
