Casella Waste Systems (Rutland, Vt.) has broken ground on a depackaging facility in Williston, Vt., designed to separate food waste from its packaging in order to capture more recyclable material and compostable organics.
The facility will be able to process 100 million pounds of organic material annually, Casella says.
Recyclable packaging will be separated and properly recycled, Casella says. Once processed, the organic material will be sent to anaerobic digester to be converted to biogas. Some food scraps may also be used for animal feed at local farms.
Casella expects the facility to begin operating this fall. Visit www.casella.com.
