The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded Troy University’s Center for Materials and Manufacturing Sciences a three-year, $3.5 million federal grant to aid in continued research and development of methods to recycle personal protective equipment used in medical settings, the university announced.
It will partner with the University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Engineering on the PPE research, which will include all aspects of recycling the materials, from the decontamination process to post-recycling applications.
PPE is an area of recycling people have been reluctant to explore due to contamination, Govind Menon, director of Troy’s School of Science and Technology, says. The United States generated 100 million tons of medical waste in 2019, the university says. Visit today.troy.edu/news/3-5-million-nist-grant-will-fund-troy-research-on-ppe-recycling.
